Surgical Management

The primary goal in the surgical management of breast cancer is to remove all cancerous tissue while also excising a margin of healthy breast tissue around it. This "clear margin" is crucial to ensure that the cancer has been fully removed. The size, location of the cancer, and the amount of breast tissue that needs to be removed will largely determine the type of surgery recommended by Dr. Mahmoud Abu Dakka. Other factors also play a role in this decision, and patients may have options if more than one type of surgery is suitable.

Generally, there are two surgical options: breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy) or a mastectomy (complete removal of the breast tissue). In some cases, plastic surgery techniques can be used to remove larger cancers while reshaping the breast to avoid any significant defects. These procedures often result in a breast uplift, similar to a breast reduction, and will make the breast slightly smaller. If the change in size and shape is significant, Dr. Mahmoud Abu Dakka may offer symmetry surgery for the other breast to ensure an even appearance.
